Predictability and the Prom -- Lee's Rants -- 10/25/97

I'd just like to write this entry as a testament to how unpredictable some people are.

Now, I just opened up my E-mail checker and saw that I got an E-mail from Brian.

It's, of course, about my last rant, in which I went off on Kathy. For those of you who haven't been following (shame on you!), I said something to the effect that Kathy's journal is boring with her computer stuff, and that I'm allowed to say that because she won't respond, given that she hasn't responded to a thing I've written to her, not even a "Happy Valentine's Day." She had claimed we were never really friends; I replied that of course we were friends, I even asked her to my prom; her only reply was that I "always" use that against her (when this was, in fact, my first ever mention of it). Remind me to write a rant about my prom when I get a chance.

In any event, I then went on to "insult Brian." Well, I was sure that's what he would say in his E-mail, anyway. I actually only mentioned him in connection with Kathy, stating that she's only a computer nut because he is, and that even when I asked him to tell her about something he sided with her in ignoring me.

OK... so here's what the E-mail really says (reprinted with permission, found within the text of the E-mail):

Lee--

I don't like computers.
But, they're an unfortunate necessity.
I therefore, am not a computer nut.
But, Kathy and I are a Nerd Couple.
You can quote me if you like.
We're secure in our nerdiness.
B esides, my hairline isn't receding.

-Brian

That wasn't what I expected. Well, at least I'm not a nerd (says the Johns Hopkins student). I can't even figure out how to indent the text of the letter more that I already have.

Sorry, Bri, but your girlfriend asked for it. She decided to play Miss Immaturity. Nobody plays that game with me. Nobody except her and Megan. For that, they must pay. And they will do so, by not responding to any of my insulting mockeries of them. So far, it's working out pretty well for me. I get to get all of my thoughts off my chest, and neither of them says a word. It's usually so hard to get people like them to shut up when they're insulted ("wah, nobody came to my birthday party, I'm gonna pretend that my sister's friends are really mine and I'm gonna get rid of all my friends and it's all gonna work out keen, man!") this is a refreshing change of pace.

Anyway, now that I mentioned it, I think I'll write about my prom now.

I decided one day not to attend my prom. Everyone was making such a big deal over it, but the fact was that every girl that I knew had a boyfriend, so I was mildly dateless. Then Ray came along and suggested that I go to the prom, and that I take (sorry Ray) Meredith (I'll use her full name here so some people don't go ballistic on my butt). I wasn't so keen on this idea, especially considering that I barely knew the girl. So I was still refusing to go to the prom. Then Kathy came along and tried to convince me to go. She added that if it were her prom and she weren't dating anyone at the time, she might feasibly ask me. I then figured, what the hell, and asked her. She said yes. Actually, I said "what about my prom?" and she said "are you asking me to your prom?" And I said "Yup," and she smirked and said "OK."

Can I just throw in here that Empire Records is the greatest movie?

Anyway, so the next day, I went up to her locker to meet her (as I always did, except the following couple of weeks), and she wasn't making eye contact. I said "Don't tell me." She, in a nutshell, said she wasn't going, because "I want to spend that night with Brian." (they were on round 1 of their title bout, and are now on round 2) Now, never mind this was almost 2 months before prom, and she really didn't need that exact night for some privacy with Brian. She could've reserved the night before, or the night after. So I assumed she just decided that I would be a crappy prom date, so she came up with this lame excuse. As it turned out, she just didn't think I'd enjoy going with her too much. Personally, I think that would've been a much better thing to say to me. I could've accepted that. I never held a grudge because she backed out of prom; the only grudge I held was because she made up that lame lie.

So, I was left dateless once more, because Josh said he didn't want me taking Megan. He lives 2000 miles away (literally; he lives in Florida, I lived in New York), but no, he didn't want me taking his girlfriend. He would have preferred that she stay home alone than go to my prom. So one day, he said it was OK. But I had just decided to ask Meredith. Here's where it gets tricky. So I was gonna ask Meredith, but that day, as luck would have it, she broke up with Ray. OK, bad timing. So, a few days later, on my birthday, I asked Megan to the prom, while I was on the phone with Josh. She accepted, and we went together. And I had a legitimately good time.

So Kathy figured I was forever pissed at her for not going with me. Hell, there are lots of people I didn't go to the prom with, but none of them are ticked at me; why should I have been ticked at her? It only bothered me that she used that "I need to be with my boyfriend that night" excuse. That hurt. It was such an obvious lie, that there's no way it could have done anything other than hurt. What was I supposed to think?

Maybe sometime ya'll will be lucky and I'll write about my sister's multiple suicide attempts. That should be a night of fun. Much like the post-prom comedy club.
